bostris

bostris is a falling-block puzzle game that runs entirely inside the terminal. It is made for players who want a quick, responsive game without leaving the command line, for those who want to sharpen their technique, and for anyone looking for a challenge against a computer opponent.

How it plays

  • Clear lines on a standard 10×20 field with all seven classic pieces
  • Rotate with the modern rotation system, including wall kicks and 180° spins
  • Plan ahead with a queue of up to six upcoming pieces and a hold slot
  • See exactly where a piece will land with the ghost piece
  • Soft drop or hard drop pieces into place
  • Earn more for multi-line clears, T-spins, back-to-back clears, combos and perfect clears
  • Face faster gravity as the level rises every ten lines

Versus AI

  • Battle a computer opponent that plays by the same rules and the same pieces as you
  • Choose from seven difficulty levels, from a relaxed D up to a blistering X
  • Send garbage lines to your opponent with strong clears, and cancel incoming garbage by clearing first
  • Watch incoming attacks build up in a meter beside your board
  • Be the last one standing to win the match

Practise and improve

  • Finesse tracking shows whether each piece was placed with the fewest possible inputs
  • Accuracy and fault counts appear live in the stats panel
  • Retry mode sends a badly placed piece back to the top to try again
  • Your top ten scores are saved between sessions

Make it yours

  • Rebind every control from an in-game settings screen
  • Tune DAS, ARR, soft drop speed and lock delay to match your handling
  • Choose the starting level and how many upcoming pieces to show
  • Turn the ghost piece on or off and pick a color palette

Feels like a finished game

  • Colorful pieces with true color support and fallbacks for simpler terminals
  • A layout that adapts to the terminal size and scales up on large screens
  • Pause, restart and game-over screens, with automatic pausing when the window loses focus
  • Uses almost no CPU while idle and only a few megabytes of memory
